To select effective chemicals substituting preharvest defoliation for improvement of fruit color, experiments were carried out at dense planting ¢¥Fuji¢¥ apple orchard. Optically active abscisic acid (S-ABA) was not effective on defoliation. Among the chemicals treated in this experiment, the synthetic intermediate of S-ABA, STC4771 was effective on defoliation and improvement of fruit color, when sprayed twice 45 and 25 days before harvest at 50 §·¡¤L^(-1). However, the effect of STC4771 was much less than that of 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA).
